Barack
Hussein Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Obama’s mother,
Ann Dunham, grew up in Wichita, Kansas, where her father worked on oil rigs
during the Depression. After the Japanese attacked on Pearl Harbor, Dunham’s
father, Stanley, enlisted in the service and marched across Europe in Patton’s
army. Dunham’s mother, Madelyn, went to work on a bomber assembly line. After
the war, the couple studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through the
Federal Housing Program and, after several moves, landed in Hawaii.
Obama’s
father, Barack Obama, Sr., was born of Luo ethnicity in Nyanza Province, Kenya.
The elder Obama grew up herding goats in Africa, eventually earning a
scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and pursued his dreams of college
in Hawaii. While studying at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, Obama, Sr. met
fellow student, Ann Dunham. They married on February 2, 1961. Barack was born
six months later.
Obama’s
parents separated when he was two years old, later divorcing. Obama, Sr. went
on to Harvard to pursue Ph.D. studies, and then returned to Kenya in 1965. In
1966, Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, another East–West Center student from
Indonesia. A year later, the family moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, where Obama’s
half-sister Maya Soetoro Ng was born. Several incidents in Indonesia left
Dunham afraid for her son’s safety and education, so at the age of 10, Barack
was sent back to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents. His mother and
sister later joined them.
While living
with his grandparents, Obama enrolled in the esteemed Punahou Academy,
excelling in basketball and graduating with academic honors in 1979. As one of
the only three black students at the school, Obama became conscious of racism
and what it meant to be African-American. He later described how he struggled
to reconcile social perceptions of his multiracial heritage with his own sense
of self. “I began to notice there was nobody like me in the Sears, Roebuck
Christmas catalog…and that Santa was a white man,” he said. “I went to the
bathroom and stood in front of the mirror with all my senses and limbs
seemingly intact, looking the way I had always looked, and wondered if
something was wrong with me.”
Obama also
struggled with the absence of his father, who he saw only once more after his
parents divorced, in a brief 1971 visit. “[My father] had left paradise, and
nothing that my mother or grandparents told me could obviate that single,
unassailable fact,” he later reflected. “They couldn’t describe what it might
have been like had he stayed.” Obama, Sr. eventually lost his legs in an
automobile accident, also losing his job as a result. In 1982, he died in yet
another car accident while traveling in Nairobi. Obama, Jr. was 22 years old
when he received the news of his father’s passing. “At the time of his death,
my father remained a myth to me,” Obama said, “both more and less than a man.”

The
following text is for questions 28 to 30
The gross components of the speech system area the lungs, trachea,
larynx (organ of speech production), pharyngeal cavity (throat), oral or bucket
cavity (mouth ) and nasal cavity(nose).
In technical discussions, the
pharyngeal and oral cavities are usually grouped into one unit referred to as
the vocal tract, and the nasal cavity is often called the nasal tract.
Accordingly, the vocal tract begins at the output of the larynx (vocal cords or
glottis) and terminates at the input to the lips. The nasal tract begins at the
velum and ends at the nostril. When the velum (a trapdoor-like mechanism at the
back of the oral cavity) is lowered, the nasal tract is acoustically coupled to
the vocal tract to produce the nasal sounds of speech.
Meanwhile, air enters the lungs via the
normal breathing mechanism. As air is expelled from the lungs trough the
trachea, the tensed vocal cords within the larynx are caused to vibrate by the
airflow. The airflow is chopped into quasi-periodic pulses, which later are
modulated in frequency in passing through the throat, the oral cavity, and
possibly the nasal cavity. Depending on the positions of the various
articulators (e.g. jaw, tongue, velum, lips, and mouth), different sounds are
produced.
In the physiological mechanism for
creating speech, the lungs and the associated muscles act as the source of 25
the air for exciting the vocal mechanism. The muscle force pushes air out of
the lungs and trough the trachea.
When the vocal cords are tensed, the air
flow causes them to vibrate, producing so called voiced speech sounds. When the
vocal cords are relaxed, in order to produce a sound, the airflow either must
pass through a constriction, in the vocal tract and thereby become turbulent,
producing so called unvoiced sounds, or it can build up pressure behind a point
of the total closure within the vocal tract, and when the closure is opened,
the pressure is suddenly and abruptly released, causing a brief transient
sound.

Dustbin
To improve comfort and cleanliness at our school, a number
of dustbins should be increased.
When we look at classroom, school condors and school
yard, there are people mineral water cups, straws, and napkins here and there.
The condition of uncleanness and discomfort really hinders learning and
teaching environment. Litters thrown carelessly cause disease, especially empty
plastic cup or glasses. They can be filled out with water coming from the rain.
This can be placed for dengue mosquitoes to spread out. Besides, theses rubbish
can deteriorate the scene. Well painted wall and green school yard do not mean
anything if litters are scattered everywhere.
Anyway I notice that most of the students in our
school have responsibilities for the school environment. They put their litters
on the proper places. But some are not diligent enough to find the dustbins.
The numbers of dustbin in our school are not enough. Or dustbin should be
processed each of steps, outside of the classroom, and some more are also the
condors. Probably one dustbin should be in every ten meters. So when students
want to throw away their litters, they can find the dustbins easily.
When school is equipped with sufficient dustbins, we
do not have problems of freak and discomfort any more. Our school will be very
clean and become a nice place to study.
31. What is the writer’s argument on a
sufficient number of dustbins?
A. They can prevent litters
B. They can save janitor’s energy
C. The students are asked to clean them
D. They make the school environment clean
E. Students can throw garbage away easily
32. The main
idea of the last paragraph is…
A. Students must keep the environment clean
B. Dustbin must be everywhere in the
surroundings
C. Enough dustbins makes the school
environment dirty
D. Dustbins are compulsory to keep the garbage
E. We can find dustbin easily
33. Anyway I notice that most of the
students in our school have responsibilities for the school environment.
The underlined word refers to….
A. Student
B. Teacher
C. The writer
D. The reader
E. The headmaster

What’s up with love? Is a 2002’s big
hit in Indonesia? Many viewers watched it again and over again (especially the
teenagers audiences). It’s no surprise considering that the movie’s theme
offers something that closely related to lives. But, it’s not all about it.
There are a lot of sociological concepts frame in the plot. It gives the
audiences something to take home about. ‘Being juvenile is not always being
part of the peer group. Follow your own heart is much better step to take’.
The director made this movie with
trying as much as possible to avoid the cliché that a teen flick tends to do
and almost succeed on it. It makes this movie as a positive one for the
teenagers, much better than a teen movie used to be (hedonism, lack of
originality, vulgarism, etc.). The cast is great. Each actor plays their part
decently and makes the plot’s development in much style. Dian Sastrowardoyo
does know how to act in front of the camera and she ends the next best thing in
Indonesia.
Technically, this movie is a mediocre. The
pace is a bit slow, but in general,’ what’s up with love?’ Is it a respectable
movie?

her, but there’s a problem--Alex hasn’t written a song in years, he’s never
written lyrics, and he has to come up with a hit in a matter of days, enter
Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), Alex’s attractively quirky lady, whose air for

The polemic about printed
advertisement has no end. Many people have strong views and feel that advertisement are nothing
more than useless junk mail, while other people they are important source of
information.
Those who agree with say that we
should have advertisement on newspapers and magazines. They state that
advertisement gives information about what is new in the market. This is easy
way of shopping. Another reason is advertisements promote business. When owner
shops compete against each other the buyers save money, more people go to their
shops and they sell more things.
On the other hand, some argue ads
should not be put in newspapers and magazines for these various reasons.
Firstly, ads cost shopkeepers a lot of money to print on paper. Also some
people don’t like find junk mails in their letter boxes. People also find ads
not very interesting. Ads also influence people to buy items they don’t need
and can’t really afford. Ads use up a lot of space and a lot of effort has to
be made to make the ads eye-catching. Ads also take up a lot of rooms in the
papers and I don’t think I find some of them very interesting.
In sum, although ads provide people
with information, they cost a lot of money to print. Therefore, I think we
should not have printed advertisement.

The
following text is for questions 42 to 44
A star is a
massive, luminous ball of plasma held together by gravity. At the end of its
lifetime, a star can also contain a proportion of degenerate matter. The
nearest star to Earth is the Sun, which is the source of most of the energy on
Earth. Other stars are visible from Earth during the night when they are not
outshone by the Sun or blocked by atmospheric phenomena. Historically, the most
prominent stars on the celestial sphere were grouped together into
constellations and asterisms, and the brightest stars gained proper names.
Extensive catalogues of stars have been assembled by astronomers, which provide
standardized star designations.
For
at least a portion of its life, a star shines due to thermonuclear fusion of
hydrogen in its core releasing energy that traverses the star’s interior and
then radiates into outer space. Almost all naturally occurring elements heavier
than helium were created by stars, either via stellar nucleosynthesis during
their lifetimes or by supernova nucleosynthesis when stars explode. Astronomers
can determine the mass, age, chemical composition and many other properties of
a star by observing its spectrum, luminosity and motion through space. The
total mass of a star is the principal determinant in its evolution and eventual
fate. Other characteristics of a star are determined by its evolutionary
history, including diameter, rotation, movement and temperature. A plot of the
temperature of many stars against their luminosities, known as a
Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (H–R diagram), allows the age and evolutionary
state of a star to be determined.
A
star begins as a collapsing cloud of material composed primarily of hydrogen,
along with helium and trace amounts of heavier elements. Once the stellar core
is sufficiently dense, some of the hydrogen is steadily converted into helium
through the process of nuclear fusion. The remainder of the star’s interior
carries energy away from the core through a combination of radioactive and
convective processes. The star’s internal pressure prevents it from collapsing
further under its own gravity. Once the hydrogen fuel at the core is exhausted,
those stars having at least 0.4 times the mass of the Sun expand to become a
red giant, in some cases fusing heavier elements at the core or in shells
around the core. The star then evolves into a degenerate form, recycling a
portion of the matter into the interstellar environment, where it will form a
new generation of stars with a higher proportion of heavy elements.
Binary and multi-star
systems consist of two or more stars that are gravitationally bound, and
generally move around each other in stable orbits. When two such stars have a
relatively close orbit, their gravitational interaction can have a significant
impact on their evolution. Stars can form part of a much larger gravitationally
bound structure, such as a cluster or a galaxy.
